The slain 16 hunters while being waylaid at Uromi
Forty days after the killing of 16 hunters from Kano State in Edo, grieving families have renewed calls for justice during a solemn prayer and protest in Kibiya Local Government Area.
The hunters, from Kibiya, Rano, and Bunkure LGAs of Kano State, were ambushed and killed in Uromi, Esan North-East LGA of Edo State, while returning home for Eid-el-Fitr. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and demands for accountability.
To mark 40 days since the tragedy, relatives, friends, and community members gathered at the Kibiya LGA Secretariat for Qur?anic prayers and a peaceful protest. They urged authorities to honour their promises and deliver justice.
Mallam Bala Dutse, whose son Amadu was among the victims, expressed frustration. ?We?ve received no credible update. The government should at least communicate with us and clarify compensation plans,? he said.
Hauwa?u Isa, widow of another victim, pleaded for support. ?They promised us justice and compensation. I?m still hopeful, but I fear it may be another empty promise,? she said, adding that she struggles to provide for her children.
Kibiya LGA Vice Chairman, Nasiru Adam Abdulaziz, expressed solidarity with the families and reaffirmed the council?s commitment to justice. He urged both federal and Edo State governments to act on their earlier commitments.
?These families deserve answers and support. It?s been forty days, and we trust the government will fulfill its promises,? he said. (Daily Trust)
