ISGS militants
At least eight members of the Defence and Security Forces (SDF) have been confirmed dead, while 16 others remain missing following an ambush by suspected Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) fighters in northern Doutchi, Niger Republic.
The Incident occurred on Sunday, May 4, during a joint patrol involving units from the National Guard and the gendarmerie in the Dosso Region.
The ambush took place between Dogonkiria and Bagaroua, in the northern part of Doutchi Department, and was described as complex and coordinated.
According to preliminary reports, 67 SDF personnel and 10 vehicles were involved in the mission. Three vehicles were reportedly seized by the attackers.
Following the incident, Nigerien forces launched a response operation in the area. However, the number of casualties is feared to rise as raking and search efforts continue.
The 16 missing personnel are being treated as potentially dead, pending confirmation.
Authorities in Niger are yet to release an official statement. (Zagazola)
