Ijaw communities task Okpebholo over non-representation in govt

Governor Okpebholo

By USMAN ALIYU

The Ijaw communities in Edo, particularly Gelegele, have called on Gov. Monday Okpebholo to address the non-representation of the Ijaws in his government.

Mr Omaghomi Olu-Derimon, Chairman of the Gelegele community made the appeal on Sunday in Benin City.

The community leader described the non-representation as long-standing political and infrastructural marginalisation.

Olu-Derimon said the Ijaws, as one of the ethnic groups in the Niger Delta and the first oil-producing community in Edo, deserved representation in government appointment and infrastructure investments.

“Our historical significance and economic contributions through fishing and trade should earn us inclusion in governance.

“Political appointments would reflect diversity and ensure that all groups feel represented,” he said.

The chairman also urged the state government to renovate the only secondary school in Gelegele and equip it with modern facilities.

According to him, there is lack of basic infrastructure in the area despite its contribution to the state’s economy.

On security, Olu-Derimon advocated the creation of a vigilante group to safeguard the waterways and combat piracy and other criminal activities.

He said this would protect local means of livelihoods and boost economic stability in riverine communities.

“The establishment of a waterways vigilante would help monitor and protect against illegal fishing, piracy, and other threats, while engaging local residents in community security,” he added.

The Ijaw leader emphasised that addressing these issues would demonstrate Okpebholo’s commitment to inclusive development and peace across the state. (NAN)
