Amotekun operatives in action
The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, said its operatives arrested 300 bandits in three months
Suspected hoodlums on Wednesday killed one of the operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps, identified as Mr. Lamidi Abiodun, during an ambush at the Papa boundary area in Iwo, Osun State, just as another operative of the security organisation remains unaccounted for after the incident.
The Incident occurred following a distress call from local farmers operating in the Papa Farm area of Iwo, who alerted the security organisation about an ongoing attack on their farmland.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Amotekun Corps, Yusuf Idowu Abass, on Thursday hinted that in response to the call, a team of Amotekun operatives, in company with members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), mobilised to the scene to confront the criminals.
According to the statement, the team was, however, ambushed by a group of armed men allegedly led by a notorious criminal known as Akeem Olofa, who has been a menace In the region. During the confrontation, Abiodun was attacked.
Although initial gunfire did not penetrate his body, he was brutally assaulted with a machete to the head and died instantly at the scene.
It reads, ?While most of the operatives managed to escape the ambush, one member of the VGN identified as Nurudeen Alowonle remains unaccounted for as of the time of this report and one Alex Sola was shot on the leg. The tragic loss of Mr. Abiodun has sent waves of grief throughout the Amotekun Corps and the entire security community in Osun State.?
Meanwhile, the incident has been reported to the Nigeria Police in Iwo, and the body of the fallen hero had been deposited at a local mortuary for further procedures.
The statement added that investigation was already ongoing, just as efforts were being intensified to arrest the fleeing hoodlums with a view to facing justice.
?We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Lamidi Abiodun and stand united in honor of his bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.? (The Guardian)
