Kaduna Police dismisses El-Rufai’s kidnapping allegation, warn against misleading claims

Ex-Governor El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Police Command has dismissed allegations made by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who claimed on social media that his former commissioner, Malam Jafaru Sani, was abducted by what he described as “Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang,” referring to the police.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the police refuted the claims, emphasizing that the Nigerian Police Force is a constitutional institution responsible for maintaining law and order.

The statement, signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan on Saturday March 14, 2025, clarified that no such “kidnapping gang” exists within the force.

“The Nigerian Police, as an institution, is created by the 1999 Constitution and is mandated to maintain law and order. In the discharge of this duty, the police have the legal, legitimate, and constitutional right to arrest and investigate anyone alleged or suspected of committing an offense,” the statement read.

This statement comes amid rising political tensions in Kaduna State, highlighting the need for responsible public discourse and adherence to legal procedures in addressing grievances.

El-Rufai had alleged that Jafaru Sani was remanded in prison custody without any formal charges or a First Information Report from the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice.

However, the police maintained that individuals, organizations, and government bodies have the right to file complaints, which the police are duty-bound to investigate and prosecute if necessary.

The Command urged the public, especially former public office holders, to be cautious about making “frivolous and malicious allegations” against security agencies, warning that such statements could mislead the public and undermine law enforcement efforts.

“Citizens who feel aggrieved should seek legal redress rather than resort to inflammatory comments that may escalate tensions,” the police advised.
