Adegbola's APC entry sparks debate in Oyo State governorship race

The entry of Dr Gbenga Adegbola into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has ignited a flurry of reactions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Dr Adegbola had expressed his unwavering support for the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

Adegbola, a retired military officer and seasoned administrator, officially joined the APC during a ceremony in Saki West Local Government Area.

Kickstarting his ongoing State-wide consultations with various leaders and principal politicians across Oyo State, he has followed the full process of declaring for APC at the Ward, LGA, State and National levels.

The Concerned United Group, a socio-cultural organization in Oyo State, applauded the move, praising state elders for persuading Dr Adegbola to contest.

They emphasised his qualifications and extensive involvement in various professional organizations, presenting him as a unifying figure.

The group's spokesperson, Mayowa Arinola, described Adegbola as the ideal candidate to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), emphasising his ability to rescue the state from "selfish politics."

Arinola emphasised Adegbola's extensive experience and community involvement, citing his upbringing in Ibarapa, which has yet to produce an Oyo State governor.

While many see his move as a positive development, few others remain sceptical. The group dismissed claims that Gbenga's ambition was self-serving, portraying him instead as a dedicated public servant of both Muslim and Christian parentage, who has consistently served the people of Oyo State and Nigeria.

However, the group believes that not everyone shares our enthusiasm, noting that his ultimate political intentions are yet unknown, and his entry was strategically orchestrated by the Party’s state executive committee to position him as the party's preferred candidate. Despite these allegations, his entry is widely welcomed and across the State with much satisfaction within the party.

He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people, a sentiment shared by Oyo State APC Chairman Alhaji Olayide Abas, who described him as a man of integrity with a passion for public service.

The coming months will undoubtedly reveal more about Adegbola's ambitions and the impact of his entry into Oyo State's already complex political landscape.

The 2027 gubernatorial election promises to be a closely contested one.
