PDP Crisis: Makarfi extends olive branch to Sheriff after court victory

Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appealed to Ali Modu Sheriff and some aggrieved members to join in rebuilding the party.

Makarfi made the call in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Kaduna, while reacting to the judgment of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, which ruled in favour of his committee.

“We wish all brothers and sisters that fasted during this Holy month of Ramadan and pray that our worship will be accepted and rewarded by Allah.

“We should all come together and reunite ourselves and move as one PDP family,” he said.

He said Sheriff’s led aggrieved members of the party are entitle to their views but called on them to give peace a chance and further declared “no victor no vanquished”.

Makarfi added: “As we have said before our committee was not set up to sideline anybody or witch hunt anybody and we are not going to do that.

“For those of our friends who are looking at it the other way, they are entitled to their views but a legal pronouncement has been made.

“The court has decided according to the constitution of PDP. The convention has enormous powers. We have not held election but the convention exercised all those powers, and having exercised that power that a vacuum arose and the convention has power to set up any committee.

“No matter what name it gives it and gives whatever function or responsibilities and that is why the convention set up a caretaker committee. So you don’t have to look at PDP constitution to see that.

“We wish all Muslims happy Eid-el-fitri celebration. Secondly, this is to also wish not only my party members but all Nigerians, because this is not a political matter, it is a spiritual matter and should not be treated as political because charity begins at home.”

While congratulating all those who have fasted, he appealed to Nigerians to pray for leaders irrespective of their political party.

“We should pray for peace and for one another. Pray for unity among our members. I call upon all of us to give peace a chance,” he said.
