Nigerian Embassy in Senegal welcomes University of Ibadan research team

The study team comprising graduate students and lecturers from the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Ibadan, Nigeria led by the Director, Professor Olanrewaju Olaniyan, has visited the Nigerian Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, while on a research trip.

The focus of the research was “Fostering Rural Empowerment and Sustainable Development Solutions in Africa”. It has been repeatedly asserted by academic scholars and world leaders in various sectors that the objectives of sustainable development will remain on paper, if practical actions are not taken. The actions imperatively require innovative approach given the context of sustainable development; which underscores meeting the needs of the present generation without harming the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainability is not only about particular environmental issues such as pollution and species extinction but also about economic progress, equity and gender equality among others. This drive necessitated the tour aimed at identifying barriers to rural employment and fostering sustainable practice that turns-off the tide of poverty, unemployment and deprivation in Africa.

In a remark, the Minister in charge of the Nigerian Embassy in Dakar, Mr. Lot Egopija, said relationship and communication should be considered as vital routes to sustainability. Nigeria and Senegal have been enjoying a peaceful relationship. The minister appealed for attitudinal change in Nigeria. He applauded Nigerians who have engaged in legitimate trade and services.

News Express reporter in a chat with the Director gathered that the University of Ibadan team would continue their field trip to other parts of the country.
