Anger, confusion in Senate as AGF snubs invitation again •Representative walked out

There was a mild drama on Thursday at the Senate as Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who was supposed to appear before the Senate was not seen during the hearing on alleged forgery of 2015 Senate Standing Rules.

The Senators were however, shocked with the absence of the AGF and made different comments on the controversy.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator David Umaru said the invitation was for the Attorney General of the Federation and not the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Prosecution Matters, Barrister Obono Obla.

The representative of the Attorney General of the Federation, in his response, said: “The AGF is currently out of the country.

Umaru and other members however, asked the AGF’s representative to take his leave, saying “the purpose of the hearing was to defend Nigeria’s Democracy but the AGF has faulted the invitation of the Senate again.”

Another member of the Committee, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, angrily stated that “this is a slap on the face of the Senate as the AGF has refused to appear before the Committee after being summoned. We just want to ask the AGF a few questions to clarify all these issues but he has failed to respond to our invitation.”

Umaru concluded that the Committee would settle the issue in the next plenary session to know what to do next. He said: “What we’ll do now as a Committee is to report back to plenary and then we will know what next is to be done.”
