Salary Arrears: Kwara teachers seek divine intervention

Teachers of primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Kwara State have organised a joint prayer session for divine intervention on the payment of their six months’ salary arrears.

The teachers converged on their secretariat to partake in the joint prayer session.

Both the Christian and Muslim scholars called on God to give the government wisdom and wherewithal to yield to the demand of the teachers.

In an interview, both the State Deputy Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Salihu Idris and the union’s Principal Secretary, Ola Idris, enumerated efforts made for government to see reason and pay the salary which had not yielded any result.

The union leaders said non-payment of the six months’ salary arrears by the government had greatly affected the economic wellbeing of their members.

On the part of the government, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Dr Muyideen Akorede while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council meeting explained that the Governor had approved through Joint Allocation Committee the settlement of teacher’s salary arrears by the end of June.

He added that the Governor took the decision in order to ensure smooth flow of education and guard against disruption of academic calendar.

As the teachers await the response from the government on the payment of their six months’ salary arrears, it is expected that the education sector will not be affected in the long run.
