Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State
Seyi Makinde, the executive governor of Oyo State, recently revealed in his latest newsletter that he once aspired to join the military but was unsuccessful in his bid. While many know him as a politician and businessman, few are aware of this unfulfilled dream ? one shaped in part by the influence of his late elder brother, Elder (Engr.) Sunday Olufunmilayo Makinde.
In a heartfelt tribute following his brother?s passing, Governor Makinde reflected on the deep bond they shared. ?You walked so I could run,? he wrote, encapsulating the profound impact Sunday had on his life. He recalled how, in 1982, sharing their father?s bed brought them closer, forging a relationship that blossomed in later years.
Sunday Makinde was more than an elder sibling; he was a role model. His achievements expanded Seyi Makinde?s perspective, inspiring him to complete his first degree before attempting to join the military. However, unlike his brother, that path did not work out for him.
Despite this, the values Sunday instilled in him?hard work, honesty, and principled leadership?remain at the core of his journey. ?You were the voice of reason in our family, a true firstborn?the binder,? Makinde wrote, emphasizing his brother?s role in keeping their family together.
Though the loss is profound, Governor Makinde finds solace in knowing that Sunday Makinde lived an impactful and fulfilled life. ?You will live on in my heart, and your memory will remain forever cherished,? he wrote, bidding his brother farewell.
While his ambition to wear the military uniform did not materialise, Seyi Makinde now serves in a different way?leading Oyo State with the lessons and legacy of his late brother guiding his path. (BusinessDay)
