Political parties and their candidates in Benue State have signed a peace accord committing them to violence-free campaigns and respect for the rule of law ahead of the 2027 elections.
Our correspondent reports that the accord was signed on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi.
The meeting brought together state chairmen of political parties, candidates, representatives of sister security agencies and other stakeholders to discuss measures for sustaining peace throughout the electoral period.
The participating parties and candidates pledged to reject political violence, respect the rights of other political actors and cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace during the signing of the accord.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, in his remark, urged the political leaders to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly during campaigns and other political activities.
Nwadiogbu particularly warned against recruiting or using political thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities.
He said the police would remain professional and impartial while providing adequate security for all lawful political activities by political parties and candidates.
The commissioner also urged political stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the police and other security agencies, particularly when planning rallies, campaigns and other major political events.
Nwadiogbu further called on political leaders, candidates, supporters and the general public to uphold the spirit of the peace accord and contribute to peaceful and credible political activities across the state. (Daily Trust)
