The Nigerian Senate has embarked on a recess of two weeks after it has passed the report on 2016 Budget Proposal of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and slashed it downward to N241 billion from N260 billion.
Chairman of the Committee on Niger Delta, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, while presenting the report during plenary on Thursday, noted that there are shortfalls in the remittance of oil companies to NDDC, adding that the committee has asked the commission to calculate these shortfalls which is already yielding results.
Senator John Enoh, representing Cross Rivers Central, in his contribution, advised that details of the report should be taking seriously.
Also speaking, Senator Matthew Urhoghide of Edo South Senatorial zone indicated that “oil is the main source of revenue for this region and, at that, details of the report should be taking seriously.”
Senator Shehu Sanni said in his comment that he has gone through the report and urged the Senate to take it seriously. Senate President Bukola Saraki, while concluding on the debate, said that the NDDC must ensure there is proper implementation of the report based on its importance to the people of the Niger Delta region and Nigerians at large.
