Niger Delta Avengers deny ceasefire agreement with Nigeria Government

The Niger Delta Avengers, a militant group in Nigeria’s Southern region has denied it ever had any ceasefire agreement with the country’s government.

In a tweet on Tuesday, the militant group said, “The NDA High Command never remember having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigeria Government.”

It comes after Nigerian government officials earlier said a one-month ceasefire had been agreed last week following talks between the oil minister, community groups and state governors in the Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on oil and gas facilities in Nigeria’s southern energy hub.

After snubbing an invitation to dialogue with the Nigerian Government, the militant group last week made a U-turn and stated a number of conditions that it expects the Nigerian Government to meet before it would engage in any form of dialogue.

One of such demands was the involvement of independent foreign mediators.

It also says the sincerity of the Nigerian government is paramount and would be a major factor that would determine if its call for dialogue would be successful or not.

The group has also warned the government, oil companies and their services firms not to carry out any repairs works and suspend the buying of crude oil from the Niger Delta region pending the creation of “the right atmosphere that will engender genuine dialogue”.

Nigeria’s oil output has fallen to a 30-year low due to a series of attacks on oil pipelines in the southern Niger Delta, home to much of the country’s oil and gas wealth, in the last few months.

The Niger Delta Avengers announced their existence in April 2016.

It has vowed to cripple the Nigerian economy by bringing the oil production of the country to zero unless its demands are met.

It also announced its support for secessionist group, Biafra by issuing a “last warning” to seven state governors to free pro-Biafran activists being held in police and military custodies in their states. (tv360Nigeria.com)
