A violent incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in Aladja, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, resulting in the tragic loss of lives of two individuals in the area.
According to Mustapha Suleman, a leader of the Arewa community in Udu Local Government Area, a scrap dealer of Northern origin, reportedly under the influence of drugs, attacked and killed one Mr. Victory Overen, a local resident who was also the scrap dealer?s landlord.
The perpetrator, allegedly wielding a cutlass, continued his rampage, threatening everyone in sight and, in the ensuing chaos, the attacker was overpowered and killed by an angry mob.
Unfortunately, the violence escalated, with angry youth attacking Hausa residents. Mustapha also reported that some Hausa residents were injured during the attack, and their properties were destroyed, with many bikes stolen.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Mustapha lauded the effort of community leaders in Aladja for their swift intervention in dousing the tension in the community. He added that the body the Deceased would be recovered from the morgue and buried according to the Muslim tradition.
The President-General of Aladja community, Mr. Shell Okakota, confirmed that, for safety, all Hausa residents in the community had been evacuated. According to him, most of the Hausa residents? properties, including bikes, were taken to the Ovwian Police Station for safekeeping.
The Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the death of both deceased, and the tragic events. He assured that the police are investigating the matter.
The Aladja community Is still reeling from the shock of this violent clash. Community leaders are urging calm and calling for peaceful coexistence among all residents, regardless of their ethnic or cultural backgrounds. (Text, excluding headline: Delta State News Bulletin)
