The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday confirmed the arrest of the gunmen responsible for the murder of over nine police officers in Delta State.

Egbetokun disclosed this during a visit to the Delta State Police Command Headquarters in Asaba, the state capital, where he addressed officers and commended their efforts in apprehending the suspects. He revealed that the police pursued the criminals into the forest, overcoming significant challenges to arrest them and recover their weapons.

“Against all odds, we pursued the suspected criminals into the forest, gave them a good fight, and arrested them with their weapons to face the law,” Egbetokun said.

The IGP praised the Delta State Command for their professionalism, emphasising the police’s commitment to bringing criminals to justice. “Our template is to fish out any criminal from their hiding place and arrest them to face the law,” he added.

In a related development, the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo, called on the police to strengthen their internal oversight mechanisms to ensure adherence to the highest standards of professionalism.

Speaking at a workshop for Police Public Relations Officers in Asaba, themed “Strengthening Nigeria Police Force Oversight and Accountability Mechanism”, Isiguzo urged the police to foster mutual trust by addressing public concerns with empathy and fairness.

“The NUJ remains committed to working with the police to build an environment where ethical practices, professionalism, and mutual respect thrive,” he said.

The NUJ President stressed that effective oversight and accountability are essential for improving the relationship between the police and the public, and for ensuring a secure and just society.

The workshop, attended by police officers and media practitioners, focused on enhancing transparency, public relations, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force. (Text, excluding headline: The Guardian)
