Miss Universe first runner-up, Chidimma Adetshina
The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Chidimma Adetshina on finishing as the first runner-up at the 73rdMiss Universe Competition, held in Mexico.
Adetshina emerged as the highest-ranking contestant from Africa, an achievement that has brought immense pride to Nigerians.
In a statement on X.com on Monday, Obi commended Adetshina’s “resilience, perseverance, and dedication” despite facing numerous challenges.
He wrote:
“I followed, with keen attention, the journey of our Nigerian beauty queen, Chidimma Adetshina, and her rise to stardom. I can only describe her journey as a demonstration of resilience, perseverance, and dedication.
“Through her struggles and challenging times, she held on to faith, hope, and determination to rise to the top. Today, she has emerged victorious.
“Although she may not have secured the 2024 Miss Universe crown, competing against over 120 contestants worldwide and achieving first runner-up and top spot in Africa is a remarkable feat we are proud of.”
Obi further highlighted how Adetshina’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration for Nigerian youths, particularly those navigating personal and societal difficulties.
He added, “In these challenging times for our nation, she stands as a symbol of hope, especially to our youths confronting various obstacles in their journey to greatness. Her story is a testament to never giving up; success lies ahead.
“I sincerely congratulate her for believing in herself and our nation. To all those who contributed to her success, your efforts have truly paid off.”
PUNCH Online reports that the 73rdMiss Universe competition’s finale at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, early Sunday morning, saw an electrifying face-off between Nigeria and Denmark as the two women awaited the final verdict.
Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, ultimately claimed the crown, succeeding Miss Universe 2023, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, while Adetshina secured the first runner-up position.
Adetshina’s journey to the Miss Universe stage was not without challenges.
Earlier this year, she withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition, where she had advanced to the final stage, due to controversy surrounding her nationality.
However, this did not deter her from pursuing her pageant dreams.
She later received an invitation to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, where she represented Taraba State and emerged victorious. (The PUNCH)
