Frontline NUJ Presidential Candidate, Garba Muhammad
Frontline Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) 2024 National Election, Comrade Garba Muhammad, has called on State councils and members of the union to kick against adoption of candidates and allow for an election based on the competence and capacity of the contestants.
This is contained in a statement issued by Comrade Gbenga Fattile, the Deputy Director, South West, Garba Muhammad for President, GMP, Campaign Council.
?Say no to ?adoption? and yes to election of credible and competent leaders of our great union through the ballot?, the statement quoted Garba Muhammad as saying during a recent campaign tour of the South-West.
Garba Muhammad in the statement tagged his Manifesto an ?Implementation Document?, highlighting the need for leaders in the media industry to come together and strategise to fight for a bailout to strengthen their performance in a period of crisis.
He promises to call for the review of the FOI Act to include the protection and safety of journalists in Nigeria.
Muhammad, the first presidential candidate from an online media organization and only candidate from a private media organization, also promised to ensure the full recognition of online practitioners as enshrined in the review NUJ Constitution.
?I am the only independent journalist from the private media while the other two candidates work in the public media organizations. This gives me the advantage as President, to speak boldly on behalf of members, without fear of being victimized by my employees,? Garba Muhammad said.
He also promised: ?We shall revive insurance, pension policies for journalists.
?We shall collaborated with State Governments and councils to establish NUJ Housing Estates in every State Capital.
?We shall see to the academic upgrade and programmes of the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), with at least one of the three courses fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
?We shall among other key issues, work with relevant MDAs to establish NUJ FM in Abuja and subsequently in headquarters of each zone?, he added.
