Archbishop Desmond Tutu has accused South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) of betrayal, saying that the party and President Jacob Zuma have let down those who fought to end apartheid.
A report by The Times of London said that Archbishop Emeritus Tutu, 84, who led the truth and reconciliation commission investigating apartheid-era atrocities and was a key ally of Nelson Mandela, criticised Mr. Zuma’s spending of state funds on his luxurious home at a rural estate while the majority of his countrymen live in poverty.
Tutu was quoted as saying that the party’s inability to deal with corruption in its senior ranks had betrayed the aspirations of those who had fought to bring down apartheid
