Reps begin probe of Abuja land swap deal

The House of Representatives has commenced an investigative hearing into the Land Swap Scheme of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The investigation, which is being conducted by the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, is to address allegations of malpractices associated with the land swap deals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The former Minister of the FCT, Senator Bala Mohammed, said the scheme was an innovation by the last administration to help fund the development of some of the new districts in the nation’s capital city.

It was the first day of a five-day investigative hearing into the land swap scheme.

Present at the hearing were the former Minister of the FCT, the Present Minister of the FCT, officials of the FCTA and investors.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Lasun Yussuf, declaring the event open, made clear the focus of the hearing, saying it would address allegations of malpractices against the FCTA.

On his part, Senator Mohammed explained what the government had intended to achieve with the scheme.

After the hearing from other investors and agencies involved in the scheme, the committee will prepare its report on the matter. (Channels TV)
