A chieftain of the Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the emergence of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee for PDP at its bungled Port Harcourt convention saved the party from collapse.
Addressing journalists in Awka, Mr. Chuks Okoye, who recently emerged the secretary of the Chris Uba faction of PDP in the state, described members of the caretaker committee, which also has Senator Ndi Obi as secretary, as people with integrity, who would consider the interest of the party in the discharge of their duties.
While saying that many interest groups would have pulled out if the matter was not carefully handled, Okoye, pointed out that the first task for the committee should be to reconcile the warring factions in the various states to make PDP a strong force across the country.
He, however, enjoined them to pay particular attention to the Anambra State branch, which he noted is neck-deep in gross injustice that had been perpetrated for long.
In his words, “What we are suffering in Anambra is a case where some people want to bend the rules, but we believe that the committee will look at the Anambra case dispassionately and call a spade a spade, no matter who is involved.
“The national caretaker committee should do things right as this is one way of bringing back justice and confidence to the party and its members in the state.”
Okoye described as baseless the insinuation in some quarters that the Ejike Oguebego-led leadership of PDP is working for Chief Chris Uba to enable him actualise his governorship ambition in 2018, adding that Chris Uba is only a resource person who has worked tirelessly to improve the fortunes of the party in the state over the years.
He noted that the issue of Anambra state governorship election for 2018 is yet to be a brought up adding that the one important step at the moment is to restructure the party and mend fences in other to put it on a winning path.
