The Anambra State House of Assembly, as well as towns in Anambra State have started setting up security groups to help forestall any ugly development. This is in reaction to the massacre of 48 people indigenes Uzo-Uwani in neighbouring Enugu State on Monday by Fulani herdsmen.
The traditional Ruler of Ifite Ogwari, Igwe Ogadagidi, whose town is prone to attack based on their huge farm land and location said they have set a vigilante group in the community to keep watch to avoid being taken unawares.
He said: “We have a big problem at hand and though we have set up a vigilante service to keep watch over our community but it is not enough, we need the assistance of the police and other security agencies to forestall the attack of these Fulani herdsmen”
Also the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano has set up a committee to look into the matter with a view to finding solution on the matter.
The committee whose duty is to ensure that the lives of the inhabitants of Anambra State is secured is made up of the army, police, civil defence, FRSC is headed by the state Commissioner of Police, Hosea Karma.
Similarly, the State House of Assembly at their sitting yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari, to address the issue immediately to avoid anarchy in the country.
The issue which came as a matter of public importance during the sitting of the lawmakers in Awka, was brought as a motion by the member representing Ayamelum constituency, Hon. Uche Okafor and supported by Hon. Ikem Uzoezie (Aguata II), Hon. Chigbo Enwezor (Onitsha North I) and Peter Ibida (Njikoka II), who spoke extensively on the matter.
Speaking on the floor of the house, Okafor said the people of Omasi in their area no longer attend to their farms for fear of the unknown since it was a border community with Enugu state.
He laid claim to raising the alarm before Christmas when he said that two persons were abducted by the same herdsmen in Umunmbo in the same Ayamelum.
Okafor maintained that 80 percent of their people were farmers, adding that because of the activities of herdsmen, his constituents were suffering and in pains.
On his part, Uzoezie (Aguata I) said: “What we heard that happened in Enugu is worrisome and our governor should direct the police commissioner to deploy security in all the border communities in the state to stop the herdsmen from invading the state.”
