The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said necessary logistics had been put in place to ensure hitch-free council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on April 9.
Administrative Secretary of INEC in the territory, Mr Abdulrahman Adamu, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
It would be recalled that the polls in the six area councils in the territory earlier scheduled on March 19, was shifted to April 9 by the commission due to inadequate ad hoc personnel for the exercise.
“The commission is fully ready for the April 9 election with the required ad hoc staff and election materials among others.
“We have been able to recruit additional ad hoc staff from the University of Abuja to meet the shortfall that caused us to shift the elections.
“The commission has also trained all the additional ad hoc staff recruited for the exercise and all is now set for the conduct of a free, fair and credible election in the FCT.”
He said that 9,374 ad hoc staff were recruited and trained for the exercise, adding that the commission had also made arrangement for extra personnel to address likely need of more staff on elections day.
Adamu assured that the elections would be peaceful, and that adequate security arrangements had been made.
He urged political parties participating in the polls to ensure that it was violence-free. (NAN)
