Three-time AFCON winners, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, this Saturday night, January 27, 2024, beat arch-rivals, five-time champions Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the Round of 16 heavyweight clash to advance to quarter-finals of the on-going 2023 edition holding in Cote dIvoire.
The hero of the night was Ademola Lookman, who struck on both halves of the tension-soaked match to give the high-flying Super Eagles two unreplied goals during the encounter at the Houphoet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
The enterprising Eagles went on the offensive from the blast of the whistle, with Semi Ajayi finding the back of Cameroonian net early on but it was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
Lookman eventually opened scores in the 36th minute off a Victor Osimhen assist.
Worry set in for Nigeria when goalie Stanley Nwabali was injured in the 76th minute and replaced by number two Francis Uzoho.
However, Lookman struck again on the dot of 90 minutes off a Calvin Bassey cut-back to make victory certain.
Nigeria will next face Angola in the quarter-finals.
