Nigerias Super Eagles this Thursday evening stunned bookmakers by overcoming more fancied Elephants of Cote dIvoire in their second group match of the on-going 202 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023).
The dogged Nigerians matched the hosts in every department of the game, ending up with the three points at stake to zoom into the second place on the table under Equatorial Guinea, who earlier beat Guinea Bissau 4-2 to move to the top with four points like the Eagles but with superior goals.
Victory for Nigeria came after top striker Victor Osimhen was fouled in the Ivorien vital area, with the referee pointing to the penalty spot after watching the replay at the request of the VAR.
Skipper William Troost-Ekong made no mistake as he blasted into the net for the all-important goal of the game.
Nigeria will play whipping boys Guinea Bissau in the last group match.
