The Federal Government has been accused of being more responsible for the menace of almajiri especially in the northern part of Nigeria.
Chairman of the Waff Road Mosque Forum (WRMF), Bello Dukku Salihu, made the accusation on Friday in Kaduna while responding to questions on orphans, destitute and vulnerable children. He spoke at a press conference to announce the launching of the appeal fund for the completion of the orphanage and a school.
Salihu said it is the responsibility of government at all levels to address the problem of almajiri systems by formulating a policy that will find out the root causes, the role of parents, the traditional Islamic clerics as well as the role of the government.
He said that the forum is an Islamic organisation established to promote and assist in the propagation of Islam and to encourage dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims towards creating an environment for peaceful and harmonious co-existence, which began its activities in 1991, but duly registered in 1995.
Said Salihu: “Since its commencement, the forum has been involved in inter organisational visit to Ikom Cross Rivers in 1993; Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom in 1997, where they distributed books and other educational materials to the Muslims on their invitations.
“Again, they organised a national conference on Zakat in 1995, first hajj conference in 1996, a conference on begging and destitution in collaboration with Council of Ulama Kaduna State in 1997 as well as second hajj conference in 2009. In 2011 aftermath of the unfortunate sectarian violence, hosted the Anglican Church of England, where discussions were held towards restoration and maintenance of peace in Kaduna State.”
