U-20 World Cup: Nigeria on vengeance mission against Uruguay

At the just-concluded FIFA Confederations Cup, Uruguay contributed to Nigeria’s early ouster by defeating the Super Eagles 2-1 in their second match in the premliminary rounds of the competition.

Tonight in Istanbul (Kick-off time is 7pm Nigerian time) Nigeria would be gunning for vengeance as both countries clash again – this time in the Round of 16 of the on-going Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.

The match has been aptly dubbed a clash of third-bests because Nigeria’s Flying Eagles finished third at the African Youth Championship in Algeria in April and the Los Charruas (as the Uruguayans are otherwise known) also placed third in the South American version of the qualifiers.

Another similarity: Both teams started out on a losing note at Turkey 2013 before recording two straight wins to finish runners-up in their respective first round groups.

This is the second time that Nigeria would be playing inside the Ali Sami Arena, the home ground of top Turkish club Galatasaray, but the first for Uruguay. Nigeria, however, are feeling very much at home, having stayed back after the win over South Korea.

The Flying Eagles have promised to win the match but assistant coach Jurgen Press, who spied on the Uruayans ahead of the match says it won’t be easy. His words: “They are a dangerous side, but we want to be the team that will be in Bursa for the quarter-final on Saturday.”
