NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been taken to hospital after breaking his hip in a fall at a concert on Friday.

The 76-year-old, who is the only six-time Most Valuable Player in league history, is set to have surgery in a Los Angeles hospital.

Abdul-Jabbar played in the NBA from 1969-89, winning six championships - five with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He held the NBA career regular-season scoring record of 38,387 points until LeBron James broke it in February.

The 19-time All-Star, who stands at 7ft 2in, still holds the records for regular-season field goals (15,837) and career minutes played (57,446).

He has also had a successful acting career, appearing in films including Airplane! and Glass Onion, as well as featuring in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory.

"We are all deeply appreciative of all the support for Kareem, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department, who assisted Kareem on site, and the amazing medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital, who are taking great care of Kareem now," said his business partner Deborah Morales. (BBC)
