The senate has directed its Committee on National Security to conduct an investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the invasion of the armed men of the Department of State Service (DSS), into the hallowed Chambers of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, last week, to impeach the controversial State Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose.

Being troubled by the irascible act under a democratic system of government, the Senate lamented that the uproar was not only unconstitutional, illegal, and unlawful, but a plot to harass the people and government of Ekiti State.

In the motion presented by Senator Biodun Olujimi of Ekiti South Senatorial District on the invasion of Ekiti State House of Assembly by armed DSS operatives on Friday, March 4, 2016, the Senate is concerned that at the end of the commotion created by the barbaric act, 4 members of the House of Assembly could not be found.

Olujimi, while speaking further on the bill, on the floor of Senate admitted that she had “called the Director of DSS 6 times and has sent 2 messages but has not gotten any response till now.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki, in his brief comment, added that the matter was a very serious one.

In His words: “I would not believe such event can occur in a democratic government and, for this fact, an investigation must be carried out, and should not exceed two weeks to report back, before Senate jumps into conclusion.”

He stated that “embarking on political vendetta and muzzling of opposition is dangerous to the survival of democracy in the country.”

Senator Ali Wakili, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, while speaking, supported the Motion, asking who is in charge of security in a Legislative House and further tasked National Assembly to look into its laws to strengthen internal security and Sergeants at Arms, so as to avoid such occurrences in the future.

Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, in his contribution, opined that “this Motion is coming at a time where we should clearly stand by the truth. We all know that there are three arms of government in democracy with their rights & privileges clearly defined.”

Ndume condemned the act of the DSS, saying this government is a government of Change but ‘what goes around comes around,’ saying that “what happened in the Ekiti State House of Assembly was not right, although it happened to the right people.”

Senator Bala Ibn Na'allah, representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, referring to the opposition party -PDP, quipped: “if you dodge away from your responsibilities, the consequences will haunt you.”

He equally made reference to 2015 elections where some machineries were supposedly disguised as DSS agents and sent to monitor elections.
