True to their name, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are flying high at the on-going FIFA Under -20 World Cup in Turkey. Late this afternoon, the Nigerian lads subdued and displaced their South Korean opponents from the second position to automatically zoom into the round of 16.
The Eagles won via a lone goal scored in the eighth minute by Kayode Olarenwaju off a free kick from the edge of the Korean box.
While Nigeria, who were third in Group B before the match, needed an outright win to be sure of qualification, the Koreans needed a draw to go through. The Nigerians showed that they meant business by completely overwhelming the South Koreans from the blast of the whistle; in fact, the dominance was such that the Koreans could not fire a shot at the Nigerian goal for over 20 minutes after kick-off.
By finishing second behind group leaders Portugal, the Flying Eagles are guaranteed to stay put in Istanbul to take on the runners-up of Group F, which has Uzbekistan, Croatia, Uruguay and New Zealand.
The John Obu-tutored boys had lost 2-3 to Portugal in their Group B opener on Friday night but made amends by beating Cuba by 3-0 in their second group game on Monday before overcoming the South Koreans to book a second round ticket.
