Twenty-two teams will take part in the first Ife Igbo peace football competition in Awka, the Anambra capital, scheduled to kickoff on Saturday.
Mr Osita Onuko, sponsor of the competition, said the football fiesta was meant to foster unity and engender peace among Awka villages.
Onuko, who is the Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), said the competition would give the players the platform to exhibit their talents and keep youths busy till the end of the year.
He said the Ife Igbo Awka Peace football competition is part of the campaign against the menace of cultism which had become a worrisome social vice in the town.
Onuko said winners of the competition would go home with N1 million, while the runners-up and third-place winners would win N500,000 and N300,000 respectively for their efforts.
The teams participating in the competition include ACTDA, Umudioka, Umueri, Umuanaga, Umuogwali, Umuenechi, Umuokpu, Umubelle, Nkwelle, Umuogbu, Umuayom andUmuogbunu.
Others are Umuzocha, Ifite-awka, Amachalla, Umuoramma, Umukwa, Amudo, Amikwo, Omuko, Umuike and Umunnamoke.
The opening game will take place at the Awka Township Stadium while the group games will take place at Ayom na Okpala and All Saints Anglican Church football fields. (NAN)
