Fulani herdsmen on the prowl, kill two in Anambra

Two people in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State were on Monday allegedly killed by Fulani herdsmen.

Reporting the tragic information on the floor of the State House of Assembly, the member representing the area, Mr Uche Okafor, through a motion called on Governor Willie Obiano to restrict the activities of herdsmen in the state.

The lawmaker maintained that the herdsmen had been wreaking havoc in his community for some time now, stressing the need for the governor to intervene to avoid the situation going out of control.

In his words, “My people have lost hope in farming as a result of the activities of the herdsmen. Two persons have been killed in my community while protecting their farm lands from these herdsmen.

“We need to do something about this situation before it gets out of hands. One would wonder what the situation would have been if the citizens had decided to take the law into their hands during the incident.

“We need to do something now to stop this senseless killing and apprehension. My people have been pressed to the walls.”

On his part, the member representing Ogbaru constituency, Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, also told the house that the people of constituency had not known peace in the past few days as a result of the activities of the herdsmen.

He stressed that the Fulani herdsmen have invaded his area and destroyed things with impunity adding that an urgent measure need to be put in place to forestall any reoccurrence.

At the end of the hearing, the lawmakers urged Governor Obiano to direct the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Hosea Karma, to intervene in the face-off before it gets out of control.
