Enugu, the coal city, is reeling under acute water scarcity.
While public taps have dried up due to what the state water corporation described as a technical problem, “the weather in Enugu is unusually hot and most wells are dried up,” a report from a News Express Special Correspondent says.
He says that the situation has become so bad that some people who can afford it have resorted to bathing with sachet water, popularly called pure water, the price of which has hit the roof.
“A bag of the pure water now sells for as much as 300 naira in the Enugu State capital while a sachet sells for 20 naira,” our Special Correspondent reports.
On the reason for the scarcity of pure water and the skyrocketing cost, he says: “The pure water producers have decided to go on strike because Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka’s Aqua Rapha pure water insisted on selling for 5 naira, forcing others to also sell at 5 naira while they find it difficult to meet production costs and so they decided to shut production.”
