A section of the Kaduna State University (KASU) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre was on Friday gutted by fire.

Our correspondent gathered that the fire, which started at about 11:45am and lasted for one hour, occurred when students were using the facility. The fire destroyed computers, server and other internet equipment worth millions of naira but no life was lost.

Students who spoke to our correspondent said fire fighters tried to prevent the fire from engulfing other sections of the centre.

“Other fire fighters from the military and NNPC also came to render assistance,” Samuel Tanko said.

The Kaduna Sate Fire Service Director, Paul Fidelis Aboi, when contacted said that they responded swiftly to the distress call and that they were able to bring the fire under control. “Many fire fighters from other sister agencies like NTI, NBTE, NNPC and Nigerian Army came to render assistance but before their arrival, Kaduna State Fire Service had already taken care of the situation. Although equipment were lost to the incident but no live was lost and no injury was recorded,” he said. Aboi noted that as soon as the cause of the fire is ascertained, measures will be taking to forestall future occurrence.

When contacted, the Vice Chancellor of KASU, Professor Williams Barnabas Qurix, confirmed that no life was lost to the fire and that the building and equipment destroyed are insured.

Preliminary investigation according to him, revealed that the fire was caused by electrical fault, disclosing that a committee has been set up to take stock of the losses.
