Late Chris Mba
By FECHI OKOH
Until veteran pop highlife act, Chris Mba, breathed his last sometime in May this year, his place on the Nigerian beats scene was not properly placed.
This is exactly what the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), headed by Chief Tiny Okoroji, Richard Cole and other board members woulddo practically on August 18, when members of the group and the Nigerian beats stakeholders would give their own, late Chris Mba, a standing ovation with a titillating tribute night billed to hold at their corporate headquarters on Oluwaleyimu Street, Ikeja.
Until late Mba joined his ancestors, the celebrated act, applauded for his first hit album, "Baby Don't Cry," actually re-defined successfully, pop-highlife music, giving it a refreshingly different slant which makes his experiment to cut across the kind of brand both the elders and youths would embrace.Luckily for him, Premier records loved the slant and signed him in as one of their acts. They did business for years, and he too, made his name and impact with commercially acceptable push outs. Mba was a very active member of COSON till he kissed the dust.
No wonder, the society too,is coming out to identify with him in death. So on August 18, by 5pm, all roads will lead to Oluwaleyimu street, off the St Francis Catholic church, Ikeja.
