BREAKING NEWS: Amnesty scores Nigeria low, ranks country among Africa’s 3 WORST PERFORMERS on corruption in 2015

Global anti-corruption watchdog Amnesty International has returned a negative report for Nigeria, ranking the country among those where no significant progress was recorded in the war against graft in the outgone year, 2015.

Amnesty’s Corruption Perceptions Index (2015) released today scored Nigeria a miserable 26 over 100 and placed Nigeria 136 out of the 168 countries surveyed. This makes Nigeria the 32nd most corrupt country in the world.

On Sub-Saharan Africa, AI lamented that the 2015 index “presents a worrying picture – with 40 of 46 countries showing a serious corruption problem and no improvement for continent powerhouses Nigeria and South Africa. Indicators for rule of law and justice score particularly badly. While some governments are reducing risks for business, there’s little change for citizens – as systemic corruption leaves many countries struggling to uphold basic rule of law.”

The index ranks Nigeria among 3 WORST PERFORMERS of 2015. South Africa is the worst performer with 83%, followed by Ghana with 76% and Nigeria with 75%.

“In Benin, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe people think poorly of their governments’ anti-corruption efforts with around four-in-five saying that their government is doing badly,” the report said.

Nigeria scored negative in all the survey areas, namely: The level of corruption has changed, corruption in the public sector, government’s performance in fighting corruption, number of people that paid a bribe, and empowerment of individual Nigerians to fight corruption.
