Rivers United celebrate their goal
Rivers United have ended Bendel Insurance’s 26-game unbeaten streak, defeating them 2-1 in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super Six tie on Friday.
The Benin-based side had the longest unbeaten run (21) in the Nigeria Premier Football League going into the game. They held giants Enyimba to a 1-1 draw in the last match on Wednesday.
Eager to extend the run, the Benin Arsenal as they are called, however, slumped to a loss in their fifth match of the NPFL Super Six held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Rivers United took the lead at the stroke of halftime courtesy of a Morice Chukwu strike.
They got another one just a minute into stoppage time. A substitute Joseph Onoja scored the goal after he was set up by Ukeme Williams.
But deep into stoppage time, Bendel Insurance grabbed a consolation goal via Divine Nwachukwu. That was the player’s third in the tournament.
With Friday’s win, Rivers United now lead in the Super Six standings having amassed eight points from four games.
They take on two-time CAF Champions League winner Enyimba in their final match of the Super Six competition.
Bendel Insurance, on the other hand, will battle against Remo Stars in their last tie. (Channels TV)
