Napolis Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen
Victor Osimhen is set to equal Obafemi Martins’ record as the second Nigerian footballer ever to win the Serie A title as Napoli could be crowned champions tonight without even kicking a ball.
Inching ever closer to their third Serie A title, Napoli could win the crown if Lazio fails to beat Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico.
If Lazio defeats Sassuolo, Italy’s long-time league leaders can become champions for the very first time in 33 years by claiming a draw against Udinese at the Dacia Arena on Thursday with five games to spare.
Osimhen is the top scorer in the league with 21 goals from 26 league appearances this season, with the Nigerian prodigy being one of the major reasons why Napoli will win the title.
The 24-year-old would, however, not be the first Nigerian to win the Serie A title as Martins was part of the Inter Milan squad that won the title during the 2005/2006 season.
Martins scored nine goals and contributed four assists in 28 Italian top-flight appearances for Inter while he netted 13 times in 43 games in all competitions.
On the other hand, Osimhen is on the verge of setting a record as the striker is set to become the first African player to emerge top-scorer in the 125-year history of the Serie A.
Napoli President, Aurelio De Laurentiis said the club was already planning for the title celebrations.
“We had prepared everything for Sunday. Paolo Sorrentino and I were ready to go on the pitch, but we had to postpone it,” said De Laurentiis as quoted by IlNapolista.
“So, I thought that also, due to limitations for travelling fans, we would install eight screens for each sector at the Stadio Maradona. There is a symbolic price of €5 for each sector.
“Sales are starting now until 18:00 for ticket season holders and then for all the others. The revenue will be given to charity. Clearly, we will replicate the party next Sunday against Fiorentina,” concluded ADL. (The Guardian)
