Tricky Dutch winger Arjen Robben was the star of the night as Bayern Munich minutes ago beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to become this year’s winners of Europe’s elite football championship, the Champions League.
The first ever all-German Champions League final played out at Wembley Stadium, England, lived up to its billing with tons of hair-raising moments, near-misses and superlative saves from both goalkeepers.
Dortmund failed to take advantage of their first half dominance, only to be punished by the Bundesliga champions in the second half.
The goals started coming in the 60th minute when Mario Mandzukic found the net off a Robben cross.
Eight minutes later, Dortmund were back on terms when Gundogan tucked in a perfect penalty awarded after defender Dante ploughed his foot into the chest of goal-bound Reus.
Just when it seemed as if the match was destined to go into extra time, Robben made something out of nothing, sprinting in to latch unto the ball during a goalmouth confusion and stab home the decider in the 89th minute.
By winning the coveted cup, Bayern thus followed in the footsteps of Chelsea of England, who won it last year after beating mighty Barcelona on the way to the final.
