It different judicial strokes today for two prominent senators – Uche Ekwunife and Buruji Kashamu.

In Enugu, the Court of Appeal nullified the election of Mrs. Ekwunife as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District and consequently ordered a fresh election within 90 days.

The verdict was rendered in the suit lodged by immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, who ran for Senate against Mrs. Ekwunife, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and others.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Datijo Yahaya said that the election of Mrs. Ekwunife on March 28, 2015, did not meet the prescription of the Electoral Act. Mrs. Ekwunife is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Oil and Gas Downstream.

Meanwhile, in Oyo State, a Court of Appeal sitting in the state capital Ibadan upheld the election of Mr. Kashamu as a Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District. A lower court had earlier ruled that there should be a rerun in some units based on the petition filed against Kashamu by Dapo Abiodun of All Progressives Congress (APC).

But Kashamu, of PDP, appealed against the lower tribunal’s ruling. The appellate court said in its ruling that the evidence adduced by the APC and its witnesses against Kashammu could not stand and as such the APC case should fall like a pack of cards
