A combined team of security operatives has successfully overpowered political thugs who this morning disrupted the governorship election in parts of Bayelsa State.
“Shootings were recorded in Ekeremor, Nembe and Brass LGAs,” News Express Special Correspondent covering the election, Arodiegwu Eziukwu, said.
“The Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr. Nasiru Oki, confirmed that arrests have been made and the situation brought under control,” he said.
News Express had earlier reported that thugs opened fire to disrupt the distribution of election materials in Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, while guns were also booming in Brass and Nembe Bassambri, with the police and the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) battling to contain the situation.
The election is a straight fight between incumbent governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his predecessor cum main rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
