Akpabio condemns APC bill aimed at gagging social media

The minority leader of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians over a bill sponsored by his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart on Wednesday, on jail term for activists on the social media, saying that it is far from what can happen in the country.

Akpabio, who took to his Twitter page to react on the development, said “dear Nigerians, go to sleep and stop worrying. Nobody is going to send social media users to jail through the Senate. It will not happen.”

He added that “we will not be in the Senate and watch such bill fly as we are committed to deepening democracy and democratic values. What many of you don't know about the Senate President Saraki is, he would never watch and allow such a bill pass.”

He explained that free speech is one of the ingredients of democracy and “many of us will watch it protected. We will not allow anything to happen to free speech in this country.”
