Chelsea have done it again! Few minutes ago at the Amsterdam Arena in The Netherlands, the Blues won their second European glory for the second straight year, beating hard-fighting Benfica of Portugal 2-1 in the final of the Europa League.
The 2012 European League champions conceded possession to the fluid Portuguese but excelled where it mattered most – in scoring goals.
After a drab first half, the stadium came alive 14 minutes on the restart when Fernando Torres broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a beauty of a goal. Goalie Petr Cech had hurled a powerful throw to skipper Frank Lampard, in space in the centre circle. Lampard found Torres, who rounded up his marker before doing the same to goalie Moraes and firing into an empty net.
Benfica were back on level terms in the 68th minute when tormentor-in-chief Cardozo powered home from the penalty spot after Azpilicueta had handled the ball in the vital area.
Just when the match appeared headed for extra time, Ramires won a corner on the right flank, taken by Juan Mata, which found the head of Branislav Ivanovic, who headed in the decider three minutes into extra time.
It was in a way a victory for Nigeria as the country’s two Chelsea stars, John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses, were dressed for the match.
