Obiano orders rebuilding of collapsed portion of Nkpor flyover

The Anambra State Government has embarked on the rebuilding of the collapsed portion of the flyover at New Motor Parts Market, Nkpor, near Onitsha, on the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

The collapse was caused by a heavy downpour and it drew the immediate attention of the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, who after inspecting the area last week called on the Federal Government to look into the deplorable condition of the bridge as well as some sections of the expressway with reference to Awkuzu-Umunya area, in Oyi local government area of the state.

News Express reports that the Awkuzu-Umunya area along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has been a death trap for more than five years.

Speaking yesterday with journalists, the State Commissioner for Works, Chief Law Chinwuba, assured Anambrarians that the State Government after making frantic but failed efforts to get the Federal Government to come to the rescue, had an agreement with it to rebuild the failed portion of the bridge and get a refund later.

“The Enugu-Onitsha Expressway is the major road linking the Western part of the country and the East linking the North and everything should be done to save the road,” the Commissioner said.

He stressed that the State Government had already intervened on Kilometre 24, Onitsha-Owerri Road, where a similar bridge was threatened and has also saved the Nkisi end which was also devastated.

He said: “We have arrested the deplorable situation at Kilometre 24-Onitsha-Owerri Road. We also arrested the Nkisi portion that was totally bad. We intervened and restored the road. Everybody is working.

“The Umunya area is one of the areas we will also work on before Christmas.

“We have also rescued a bridge at Umuawulu in Awka South local council and Ogbunka in Orumba North council.”
