The Abia State Government has cleared the air over the protests by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the release of the Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, which has cut through many Eastern states and the South South, stressing that the state remains very much peaceful.
Godwin Adindu, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, minutes ago in a statement regretted that “detractors of Abia are catching in on the situation to insinuate that there has been disturbances in Aba.”
He said: “Their aim is to ride on the situation to actually create problems and cause a breach of peace.
“But, the truth of the matter is that Aba has been calm and the people of the city have maintained a peaceful and conducive atmosphere. The people of Aba have conducted themselves in a very responsible manner and have resisted all the attempt by election petitioner losers to use them to vent out their frustrations.
“The information being disseminated online that Aba was locked down by protesters is false and misguided and only aimed at puncturing the wide jubilation and celebration that that have engulfed the city and other parts of the state since the tribunal affirmed the victory of our Governor.
“The security agencies worked cordially with the leaders of IPOB in the city to ensure that there was no violent demonstration in the state as was experienced in other states. In some parts of the city where IPOB led a peaceful match today (Saturday, Nov, 7) , a Police detachment followed on with them and there was no recorded case of violence or disturbances.
“The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, uses this opportunity to reiterate his determination to ensure that law and order are maintained in the state at all times, while respecting the right of freedom and liberty as guaranteed by the spirit of democracy.
“The Governor also appeals to all residents of Aba and Umuahia and the entire people of the state to be partners in progress with government in the earnest pursuit of a peaceful coexistence of all citizens and therefore directs any aggrieved group to follow due procedure in channeling their grievances and not to engage in any act that will cause a breach of peace.”
