ICPC inaugurates rebranded anti-corruption volunteer corps

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), on Thursday in Abuja, inaugurated its rebranded National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps (NAVC).

Mr Ekpo Nta, the Chairman of ICPC said the inauguration of the corps in 2008 and the current rebranding of the outfit was to sensitise and mobilise Nigerians against corruption.

Nta said the volunteer corps was also established to serve as avenue for citizens to participate actively and directly in the campaign against the national scourge.

“Experience all over the world has shown that law enforcement is more successful and effective in countries where citizens supply information willingly and are active partners with the relevant agencies.

“NAVC provides an opportunity for collaboration with individuals and organised groups, including professional bodies toward eradicating corruption in Nigeria.

“The new NAVC will develop a corps of volunteers for community service against corruption, mobilise and educate the citizens on corruption and its ills.”

Nta recalled that the ICPC suspended the activities of the corps nationwide in 2014 following some lapses and selfishness noticed among members of the corps.

He identified non-adherence to operational guidelines, inadequate training of volunteers and lack of proper vetting of applicants as reasons for the lapses.

In his remark, Mr Mike Sowe, the National Coordinator of NAVC, called on volunteers to ensure full adherence to the operational guidelines of the corps.

He said the rebranding was to ensure efficient and effective operation of the corps, adding that members would be trained to cope with the assignment.

According to him, the streamlining of membership of the corps will ensure recruitment of more committed and dedicated members.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event witnessed the unveiling of operational guidelines and training manuals for the anti-corruption volunteers. (NAN)
