More facts have emerged on the invitation, yesterday evening, of immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Goodswill Akpabio, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

News Express had reported the news shortly after it broke, indicating that the Senate Minority Leader was being grilled at EFCC Headquarters, Abuja, over alleged multi-billion naira fraud purportedly perpetrated during his eight years watch in Akwa Ibom that ended on May 29 this year.

“Senator Akpabio went to EFCC this evening on his own volition based on some spurious allegation by one Leo Ekpenyong to the EFCC,” his media aide, Jackson Udom, had said in the early hours of the night.

He, however, dismissed reports (News Express not included) that his principal had been arrested. “This evening, Senator Akpabio left his Abuja residence to honour an invitation by the EFCC. So the issue of being arrested is certainly out of it,” Udom said.

It later emerged that Senator Akapbio was invited for questioning for allegedly misappropriating a princely sum of N108.1 billion during his days as Akwa Ibom governor.

The ebullient politician, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was eventually released after about four hours and escorted home by his lawyers and a few aides who followed him to the EFCC office.

“He had dinner at home with his family this evening,” one of his aides told News Express around 11:00 p.m. It is not immediately clear when next he will keep a date with the anti-graft watch dog.
