All is now set for the 40th Anniversary and 31st convocation ceremonies of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), kicking off this Friday with a Special Juma’at Service at the University Central Mosque and a Special Church Service on Sunday at the University’s Chapel of Light.

According to a statement by the Head of the University’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, Mr. Kunle Akogun, among the guests expected to attend the twin ceremonies are President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the Visitor to the University, and President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana.

The Ghanaian President, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), will deliver the 40th Anniversary Lecture on Friday, October 23, which is the University’s Founder’s Day. The title of the Lecture is “Africa’s Agenda 2063: Ending Poverty and Ensuring Prosperity in Africa”.

Mr. Akogun listed Award of Prizes, First Degrees, Postgraduate Degrees and Diplomas as part of activities scheduled for the week-long events. Others, he said, include the investiture of the University’s Fifth Chancellor, HRH (Dr.) Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, the Emir of Katsina, on Thursday, October 22; a Convocation Lecture entitled “Educational Reform and Nation Building in Nigeria” to be delivered by Prof. Jacob Kehinde Olupona of the Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA; unveiling of a Commemorative Book, “Unilorin @ 40: The Soaring Eagle” by President Buhari, as well as the commissioning of about 22 new projects executed by the University Administration in the last one year – also by President Buhari – on Friday, October 23.

Akogun said that other events lined up include a film show titled “Alaaru” (Carrier) written by an alumnus of the University, Tayo Afolayan; a drama presentation by the National Troupe of Nigeria; an Exhibition of research breakthroughs and academic achievements by the university over the last 40 years; and a performance, entitled “Firestorm,” by the National Theatre of Ghana.

He added that there will also be a Re-union Luncheon designed to bring together and honour foundation staff and students of the university as well as Alumni Get-Together.

Akogun said that the Anniversary/Convocation activities would be rounded off with a Special Thanksgiving Church Service on Sunday, October 25, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Unilorin Main Campus, at 10.00a.m.
