Sallah: Scavenger sentenced to 3-week community service for stealing 3 rams

An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Iyaganku on Monday sentenced a scavenger, Idowu Ogundiwin, to three weeks community service for stealing three rams valued at N125 000 on Sallah day.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A. A. Adebisi, who handed down the verdict, said the punishment should be served in the community where he committed the offence.

“The community service is to be executed at the court premises from 9.00a.m. to 1.00p.m. daily.”

Adebisi said the accused was convicted for stealing three rams after pleading guilty to all three-counts.

“He is hereby sentenced to three-week of community service, five days on each count from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. daily and the accused should be coming from the prison everyday.”

He said the accused should be supervised by prison officials while the serving the punishment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ogundiwin, 31, of No. 10, Ajeigbe St., Ring road, Ibadan, was arraigned on a three-count charge of stealing, conspiracy and stealing.

He pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. A. Aguda, urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying the accused has showed remorse through his guilty plea.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Adenike Adeyemi, had told the court that Ogundiwin with others still at large conspired to commit the offences.

Adeyemi said Ogundiwin stole three rams valued at N125, 000, property of Mr. Muideen Ajelekan of SW3/368, Popo Yemoja, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

She said the accused also stole a sewing machine value at N20, 000, belonging to Olawunmi Edward.

The offence, she said, was committed on Sept. 24 about 5.00 a.m. at Automart office in Molete area of the metropolis.

The offences contravened Sections 390 (3), 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000. (NAN)
