The Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGSERC) has announced the formal commencement of its regulatory operations in the state, alongside an order mandating the registration of all electricity licensees and operators within the state.
The commencement follows the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) order transferring regulatory oversight of the intrastate electricity market to the state, as well as the Ogun State Electricity Law passed by the State House of Assembly in line with the Electricity Act 2023 as amended.
According to a statement signed by the Chairman of OGSERC, Engr. Jide Onakoya, indicated that the Commission now fully empowered to regulate all electricity activities within the state.
The statement reads; “By this announcement, all licensees, operators, developers, and service providers in the electricity value chain in Ogun are hereby required to register with OGSERC, thus, the exercise, backed by law, and was critical to ensuring safety, standardisation, consumer protection, and enabling environment for investment in the state’s power sector.”
He said that the following categories are required to register: electricity generation, distribution, transmission, supply and trading companies; Mini-grid, off-grid, embedded generation and captive power operators; Electrical contractors, installers and service providers; IBEDC, Eko, DisCo, Ikeja Electric and their subsidiary companies operating in the state; and all industrial, commercial and private entities operating electricity undertakings should endeavour to register.
Engr. Onakoya warned that operating any electricity business in the state without due registration and licensing by OGSERC is illegal and contravenes the State Electricity Law, directing all affected operators to visit the Commission’s headquarters on the 5th and 6th floors, OPIC Tower Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta or its official e-mail (registration@ogserc.org.ng) to commence registration within 30 days of this press statement.
He stated further that the deadline for compliance is Tuesday, 2nd December 2026. Failure to comply will attract sanctions as prescribed by law, reassuring residents and investors of its commitment to delivering a transparent, efficient and reliable electricity market that supports the state’s position as Nigeria’s industrial hub.
